The parents of students at Oriwu Model College in Ikorodu, Lagos, staged a protest on Sunday against the Lagos State Government's hike in boarding fees. The peaceful demonstration took place at the college gate, with parents calling for the prompt reversal of the fee increase from N35,000 to N100,000.
The Chairman of the college's Parents Forum Association, Mr. Kazeem Oladuni, urged the state Ministry of Education to revert the increment to facilitate their children's return to school. He expressed concerns over the sudden fee hike, emphasizing the financial strain it imposes on parents during challenging times.
Mrs. Adedoyin Badmus echoed the sentiment, stressing that education should be accessible to all, without exorbitant fees.
Mrs. Mary Enaayi appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to consider the hardships faced by parents, particularly those in modest financial circumstances, striving to provide quality education for their children.
Enaayi passionately called on the state government to promptly reverse the fees to ensure equal access to education for all members of society. She highlighted the impact of the fee hike on parents, especially those with limited financial means, who sacrifice to provide quality education for their children.
Enaayi emphasized the detrimental effect of the increased fees on the students' futures, urging the government to reconsider the decision to prevent educational disruptions for many families.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, protesting parents displayed placards bearing messages such as 'No reduction, No resumption', 'We need free education', 'Our government is wicked', and 'N35,000 to N100,000 is too outrageous', expressing their discontent with the significant fee escalation.
