NASRDA Scraps 2025 Satellite Launch Due to Funding Shortfall.

The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) has announced the cancellation of its plans to launch a satellite from Nigeria in 2025. The Director-General of NASRDA, Dr. Halilu Shaba, revealed this during the NASRDA Day presentation at the 8th Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Expo in Abuja.

Dr. Shaba cited financial constraints as the primary reason behind the decision, emphasizing that satellite launches require significant capital investment. Despite ongoing efforts to develop the necessary capacity, NASRDA is currently not financially prepared for the endeavor.

However, Dr. Shaba expressed optimism about the agency's future prospects, highlighting the existing design for a satellite and the potential for launch pending improved budgetary allocations. He also emphasized the importance of updating the agency's roadmap in line with current realities, including exchange rate fluctuations.

While acknowledging the economic impact of space programs, Dr. Shaba underscored Nigeria's ongoing contributions to the global space community. He highlighted the operational success of NigeriaSat-2, which continues to provide imagery services for Nigeria, Africa, and beyond.

In addition to satellite operations, NASRDA has made significant strides in other areas, including collaboration on a rocketry program with the military and leveraging space technology for security purposes, such as geo-visualizing terrorists' activities and crime mapping in the North East region.

Despite the setback, Dr. Shaba reaffirmed the long-term benefits of space technology for Nigeria's socio-economic development. While the 2025 satellite launch goal may have been postponed, NASRDA remains committed to advancing space science and technology for the benefit of Nigerians.
