Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning in Yobe State to Spend N200 Million on Air Conditioners

The Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning in Yobe State, with a budget approval of N1.131 billion for capital expenditure, intends to allocate N200 million for the purchase of two air conditioners, as revealed in the state's 2024 appropriation bill obtained by SaharaReporters.

This is part of the state's N217 billion appropriation bill for 2024, signed by Governor Mai Mala Buni in December 2023. Additionally, the ministry plans to purchase two television sets for N100 million.

The bill also includes allocations for other sectors, such as N180 million for the construction and renovation of mosques and graveyards under the state Ministry of Agriculture. Furthermore, N30 million is designated for the construction of a mosque at Nasari grazing reserve, totaling N210 million.

The impact of terrorism on communities in Yobe State is evident, with recent attacks reported by SaharaReporters, including an incident where Boko Haram insurgents targeted the convoy of Major General MLD Sara, Theatre Commander, Sector 2 Joint Task Force (JTF) North East (NE), Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) of the Nigerian Army using explosives.

Despite the challenges, Major General Sara and another army personnel in the vehicle remained unharmed, though the driver sustained a leg injury and the vehicle was damaged. The incident occurred during the commander's assessment visit to a military formation in Kukareta, which had been earlier attacked by terrorists, resulting in casualties including a mobile policeman and two civilians.

ISWAP, the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram, formerly known as Jamā'at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da'wah wa'l-Jihā, has been expanding its influence in the region following the death of Boko Haram's leader, Abubakar Shekau. The group's membership has grown with the defection of numerous Boko Haram fighters.
