The highly anticipated National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Image Awards in the US have nominated the star-studded Nollywood film “MamiWata.”
The film, which was written and directed by C.J. Obasi, has been nominated for the 55th annual awards, which will take place on Saturday, March 16 in the Outstanding International Motion Picture category.
Obasi called the nomination “special,” revealing this on his X page.
“This one is so special,” he remarked. I am so grateful for this incredible honor from the @naacpimageaward. I am grateful to my friends, family, team, and fans. This is ours.
Rita Edochie, Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Kelechi Udegbe, EmekaAmakeze, Tough Bone, Jakob Kerstan, and C.J. Obasi were among the actors who starred in the movie “Mami Wata.”
It also explored themes of love, sacrifice, and the power of the paranormal while delving into the mysterious realm of water spirits.
Based on West African tradition, Mami Wata is a 2023 black-and-white fantasy thriller that made its Sundance Film Festival debut.
The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) chose it as Nigeria’s submission for the 96th Academy Awards’ Best International Feature Film in October 2023.
It has received a nomination for the 39th Independent Spirit Awards in the Best International Film category.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), with its headquarters in the United States, hosts the annual NAACP Image Awards, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
It honors the achievements of persons of color in a variety of industries, including international film and television.
With over 40 image award categories chosen by NAACP members, it recognizes exceptional performances in theater, film, television, music, and literature.
