Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, delivered a compelling call for increased investment in state-of-the-art technology to enhance Nigeria's ability to address security challenges. Speaking at the inaugural founder's day lecture of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Prof. Ogundipe emphasized the pivotal role of innovation, science, and technology in nation-building.
Addressing the audience on the theme "Nation Building Through Innovation, Science and Technology," Ogundipe highlighted the impact of defense technology on a nation's security apparatus. He asserted that countries investing in science, innovation, and technology gain a strategic advantage, particularly in addressing evolving security issues.
"Innovation and technology can be very important in improving a country’s internal security. It helps to create strategies, technologies, and policies that are effective in addressing changing security issues," said Ogundipe.
He underscored various facets where innovation and research contribute to internal security, including analysis and intelligence gathering, technology adoption, cybersecurity, border security, conflict resolution, peace building, training, skill development, and public awareness.
Ogundipe stressed the need for self-reliance in security matters, stating, "No other country can help us; we need to help ourselves to invest in our security."
The former Vice-Chancellor also linked a country's ability to innovate and utilize technological advancements to its economic development. He highlighted the role of innovation, science, and technology in infrastructure development, economic growth, and job creation.
"New industries are encouraged to emerge through investments in technology and innovation. In addition to producing highly skilled jobs, the expansion of industries like biotechnology, clean energy, and information technology also supports ancillary businesses, which boosts overall employment and economic diversification," Ogundipe explained.
He urged nations to harness the transformative power of innovation for building resilient and prosperous societies. Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya, Vice-Chancellor of LASUSTECH, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the institution's commitment to becoming a globally acclaimed and world-class university.
During the event, 67 students with a remarkable 4.50 CGPA were awarded a 50% scholarship on their tuition fees. Prof. Adebisi Balogun, former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, also contributed to the celebration by awarding N75,000 to the best students in each of LASUSTECH's five faculties. The founder's day lecture aimed to share the institution's achievements and impact in fulfilling its mandate, fostering a vision of a promising and inclusive future driven by innovation.
