Edo State possesses immense potential to become the breadbasket of Nigeria through its rice cultivation.

According to Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe, a retired Permanent Secretary from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture. With his expertise and determination, he aims to rejuvenate the agricultural sector in the state.

Dr. Umakhihe is particularly encouraging women and youths to engage in rice farming, leveraging Edo State's rich history in producing renowned varieties such as 'Ekpoma Rice' and 'Illushi Rice'. It's disheartening to see the decline in rice farming due to neglect, but Dr. Umakhihe's vision includes sinking boreholes in rural communities to ensure adequate food supply and potable water. Additionally, he plans to address the challenges of water scarcity and poor road infrastructure to facilitate the transportation of food produce to markets. By reintroducing irrigation systems and boosting productivity, he aims to bring Edo State back to its

former glory as a thriving hub of rice cultivation. Exciting times lie ahead for the agricultural landscape of Edo State
